Flu and COVID vaccine FAQs

1. When is the best time to get the vaccine?

Flu vaccine: the best time is before the flu season starts in your area, typically in early fall.

COVID-19 vaccine: it's best to get vaccinated as soon as eligible, especially before the winter months when respiratory viruses are more common.

2. How long do I have to wait after having COVID-19 to get the vaccine?

Plan to wait until you have recovered from acute symptoms of COVID-19. You can delay the vaccine for up to 90 days after having COVID-19, but it is not a requirement.

3. Can I get both vaccines at the same time?

Yes, you can receive both the flu and COVID vaccines simultaneously.

4. How long does the vaccine last?

The duration of protection from the COVID-19 vaccine varies, but booster doses may be necessary, especially with new variants.

The flu vaccine provides protection for the duration of the flu season, about six months.

5. How many shots will I need?

Flu Vaccine:

If it’s the first time you’re getting the flu shot: 2 shots, spaced at least 1 month apart.

After getting the initial 2 shot series: 1 shot each season.

COVID-19 Vaccine:

6 months to 4 years:

Unvaccinated: 2 shots, 4-8 weeks apart. If turning from 4 to 5 years within 4-8 weeks, they should receive the second dose.

Previously vaccinated: 1 shot

5 to 11 years (unvaccinated and vaccinated): 1 shot (if turning from age 4 to 5 between doses, they should still receive 2 doses total, if it their first series).

12 years and older: 1 shot, unless immunocompromised.

6. How long after the last vaccine do I have to wait to get the new one?

COVID: There should be a minimum interval of 2 months between your last 2023–2024 COVID vaccine and the 2024–2025 dose.

Flu: It’s recommended to get the new flu vaccine every season.

7. Will the vaccine stop me from getting COVID or the flu?

While the vaccine may not prevent you from contracting COVID or the flu, it will reduce serious symptoms and help prevent hospitalizations.

8. What if I am breastfeeding?

Maternal vaccination has been shown to be safe and effective. It also protects infants younger than 6 months from severe COVID-19 and hospitalization.

9. If I’ve had Pfizer, can I get Moderna?

Yes, it is safe to receive a different vaccine brand for your next dose.

We appreciate your patience and wish everyone a safe and healthy fall.

Sincerely,
The Team at Foxhall Pediatrics
