COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE
Foxhall Pediatrics is currently following the American Academy of Pediatrics immunization guidelines.

We have received multiple questions regarding this season’s COVID-19 vaccines and would like to provide you with the following information:

Who is considered at high risk for severe COVID-19 infection?
Children 6 months to 23 months and patients with the following conditions: developmental disability, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, chronic kidney/liver/lung/heart/hematologic/neurologic disease, diabetes, malignancy, rheumatologic disease, organ transplant. *This is not exhaustive list.*

How can I get this season’s COVID-19 vaccine for my child?
You can set up a vaccine appointment with one of our Medical Assistants at Foxhall Pediatrics. Alternatively, you can contact local pharmacies to see if they have the vaccine available for your child.

Which COVID-19 vaccine product will you administer at Foxhall Pediatrics?
Moderna mRNA Spikevax Vaccine, 2025–26 Formula (6 months–11 years, and 12 years+).

Will my insurance company cover the vaccine this season?
It’s uncertain. It is possible that, even with the above risk factors, your insurance may not cover the vaccine cost or may assign a certain amount to patient responsibility. With so much in flux, it’s important to check with your insurer about coverage policies for your specific insurance contract. They may request the following CPT codes to assist in answering this question:
Moderna SpikeVax 6mo to 11 years: 91321
Moderna SpikeVax 12yr+: 91322
Vaccine Administration Code: 90480

How much will the vaccine cost if my insurance company doesn’t cover it?
The maximum out of pocket expense for the 2025/26 COVID-19 Moderna SpikeVax vaccine, given at Foxhall Pediatrics, is $235.

When is the best time for my child to receive this vaccine?
Any time after it is available and your child meets the age requirements. Additionally, to maximize immune protection, you may consider waiting 3+ months after acute COVID-19 infection.

Can the 2025/26 Covid-19 vaccine be given at the same time as other vaccines?
Yes, the COVID-19 vaccine can safely be given at the same time as other childhood immunizations.

Side Effects/Safety
Are there any different side effects or safety concerns with the updated 2025-2026 formula mRNA vaccines?
No, the side effect and safety profile are the same as that of previous formulations.
The side effects have been similar to other routine vaccines- sore arm or leg, redness, fatigue, fever, chills, headache, myalgia, and arthralgia.
The side effects are temporary and mostly mild or moderate. Anaphylaxis has been observed following receipt of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, but this has been rare. Rare cases of myocarditis or pericarditis have been reported – most often in males between 12-39 years of age.  Additional information on common side effects and rare adverse reactions can be found in the package inserts of the vaccine products: Package Insert
